Jovan Hernandez is a self-taught technology professional with 10 years of experience in IT operations and software engineering, including five years in the finance sector, particularly with buy-side firms. Despite not having a formal degree in computer science or finance, Jovan successfully broke into both industries. After earning his degree, he spent some time in the restaurant industry before deciding to pursue a career in tech at the age of 25. He taught himself how to code by building websites and starting a blog, which eventually led to his first tech job in New York City, where he steadily advanced by continuously learning new skills and leveraging strategic opportunities.
Starting in help desk roles, Jovan worked his way up to becoming a cloud engineer. He was then recruited by Capital One to help develop platforms for their banking and commerce divisions. This pivotal experience drew the attention of financial firms, and he secured his first major role at Third Point, a hedge fund in NYC, as VP Cloud Engineer. At Third Point, he was responsible for building infrastructure and data pipelines for the quant team, which played a key role in the firm’s investment decisions.
Afterward, Jovan earned his SIE and Series 57 licenses, enabling him to transition into proprietary trading. He also consulted for hedge funds and asset managers, advising them on how to build robust, scalable trading infrastructure.
Jovan Hernandez currently works at Point72 on the Macro Strategy team, where he supports quant researchers and developers. His work focuses on improving trading infrastructure, deploying custom tools for performance analysis, and developing ETL pipelines for processing financial market data.
